The #1 Parenting Tip I Use Every Day
Both the kids and I are better listeners as a result
I’ve got two children, aged seven and four years old. They’re lovely, but like all kids their age, they can be a handful to manage sometimes.
To say the least.
I’ve discovered a strategy that is simple and works wonders to increase effective communication with them. Here it is:
Getting down to their level.
That’s it! In order to communicate with them (and have them listen to you more effectivity, of course) crouch down or sit on the floor next to them and look them right in the eyes.
They’re not going to respond as well if you’re standing way up there five feet above their head.
Look them in the eyes, let them talk and give them time to get their words and concerns out and then they will do the same for you. I guarantee it, but here are some smarter people to back me up.
Peggy Harrelson from Virginia Tech states:
Communication is more effective if both people are on the same level. Adults need to stoop down to the child’s level or sit beside her. Making eye contact with the child let’s her know that she has your attention and is much less intimidating to the child. (source)
